Why Is the Charge on My Card Higher Than My Purchase Amount?

Some merchants place a temporary hold on your card that's higher than your final purchase amount. This protects them in case the final charge increases. Common examples:

  • Hotels and car rentals: A higher hold to cover potential extras like room service or fuel.

  • Restaurants: An estimated tip is often included in the hold.

  • Gas stations: A higher hold to ensure your account has enough funds for the final amount.

  • Ticketing services: A higher hold to cover possible price changes for flights or events.

The hold is usually adjusted to match your actual spending once the transaction is finalized.

If the charge is still higher than expected:

Contact the merchant to confirm whether they've processed a refund. From there:

  • If the merchant has processed a refund: Once we receive it, the funds will be credited to your RedotPay account within 2–15 days.

  • If the merchant has not processed a refund: The merchant typically processes refunds automatically within 30–40 days. Once we receive the refund, we'll credit it back to your RedotPay account.
